When you twist into your core strength you will feel that the twisting movement takes you deeper into your center. Using both the core strength of the body and the flexibility of the spine and torso is a complex movement. Rather than just twisting along the spine this posture involved a deep rotation of the hips as well as the shoulders. You need the support of the inner body as well as flexibility. Ardha Matsyendrasana is a posture in the Intermediate Series that is used to re-establish connection to the core and literally twist into your center after the deep backbending of Second Series Ashtanga Yoga.
